Mt. Bohemia 2007

Accompanied by Burt and Jon, I made my annual pilgrimage to the skiing mecca of the midwest... Mt. Bohemia.

Again (4 for 4) the conditions were less than ideal. Seems like each time I head up there it's been just a bit too long since the last snow - and it's just a bit too warm. Unlike previous years, I don't think that I can really claim that we were unlucky in weather... it is after all nearly mid-March.

As you can see: definitely some grass, rocks, and roots showing out there:

This was the first year that I haven't stayed at the 'on hill' cabins. We got our act together just a little too late for them to still be available, but we were able to find a place in nearby Copper Harbor. It was a nice change of pace - Copper Harbor is located on the northern most point of Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior. Getting there was a gorgeous drive both on the night we arrived and on subsequent days. In exchange for the 10 minute trip to the hill, we gained a bar that actually had some people in it at night! Quite the changeup from staying on the hill.

Both Friday and Saturday featured wet and heavy snow. It may be better than ice, but it really makes you work hard to get down the hill. Moving that much heavy snow with each turn, combined with the length and pitch of Mt.Bohemia leads to some pretty tired legs by the end of the weekend.

While discussing Burt's lack of a cellphone on the way up he tried convincing me that it was getting harder and harder to find a payphone. To prove him wrong, I took a shot of this easily accessible and heavily used phone in Copper Harbor.

Despite the conditions, it was a great trip and we're already plotting next years trip up.

Google Video

For the last week or two, I've been procrastinating on getting CDs to JNo and Burt with the video from our Mt.Bohemia trip. Well, the other day my laziness paid off when using something called the "internet" (recommended to me by Tom Geer) I discovered Google Video.

The process is slightly drawn out - it took about a day between uploading them and having them "approved", but that's just fine.

The end result is that you can now go out and download or stream video from the trip! Actually, their streaming was excellent when I just tried it. Just make sure to reduce the size of the window a bit since these were filmed with the digital camera so the resolution isn't the hottest ever.

Anyway, without further ado, I give you video of Burt, Jno, and I (and then Burt and I again). Enjoy!

Lots of posts today...

The pictures of the weekend trip to Mt Bohemia are uploaded. The videos (avis) were actually better than the photos but I don't think that I really have a way to post those for you unfortunately. Suffice it to say: we all looked awesome crusing through the trees.

My friend Brandon sent this update, from the Conservative Voice along to me regarding the 'Lost Liberty Hotel'. You may recall there was a post here quite some time ago on the topic. You really should check it out... especially since for many readers the opportunities to agree with conservative news outlets are few and far between!

Also, while we were away apparently the scoreboard was broken in LA as Kobe Bryant went off for 81! The second highest point total in history. Making it even more amazing: he sat out for 6 minutes AND only had 26 in the first half. Like him or hate him: that's absolutely incredible.

Mt.Bohemia

For the third straight year Mt.Bohemia was a great time. Unfortunately, this was also the third year of warm temperatures and not quite enough snow, but the terrain they have there makes it well worth the 7 hour drive anyway!

Actually, our first day there (Saturday) the snow was great for the first half of the day. They had received quite a dose over the course of the week and with sparse midweek crowds - the majority of it was still out there waiting to be found.

Unfortunately, JNo broke his binding (as in - it exploded) early on in the day but he was able to get his money back and took the rest of the day off. Sunday he was back out there with rentals. Burt and I were able to make it through both days but all three of us definitely came home battered and broken!

I'll post some pictures tonight. So, make sure to check over at our Flickr page later.
